Thunderbirds Enjoy Successful Weekend At Clarence Invitational

Last Saturday, the Chautauqua Lake JV volleyball team played in an eight-team tournament at Clarence. The Thunderbirds went 5-1 and finished first in their pool by beating East Aurora, splitting with Grand Island and beating Mount St. Mary’s. In the Gold Bracket semifinals, Chautauqua Lake lost the first set to Sacred Heart, 23-25, won the second set, 25-14, and fell behind 4-9 in the deciding set to 15. The Thunderbirds fought off two match points to win, 16-14. In the finals, Chautauqua Lake played previously unbeaten Clarence, 25-17, in the first set and were able to come from behind in the second set to win, 25-22. Sydney Hawkins and Jessica Wiemer were named to the all-tournament team and Ava Olson was named tournament MVP. The Chautauqua Lake Varsity team won the silver medal bracket at the Clarence Invitational on Sept 29. Chautauqua Lake defeated teams from Mount Saint Mary’s, Sacred Heart and Maryvale to will the bracket.
