SHERMAN — Just over a minute into Saturday’s game, Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Gerrit Hinsdale threw an interception on his first pass attempt to set up a Cattaraugus-Little Valley touchdown.

It was a terrible start for the junior quarterback.

But not much went wrong for Hinsdale or the Wolfpack after that.

Hinsdale went 9 of 11 for 214 yards and three touchdowns, and Clymer/Sherman/Panama scored 48 unanswered points to coast to a 54-12 Class D victory over the Timberwolves at Harry W. Brosius Field.

Anointed the No. 1 team in Class D on Wednesday by the New York State Sportswriters Association, the Wolfpack finished their week in dominant fashion.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama racked up 445 yards of offense, including 231 on the ground, while holding Cattaraugus-Little Valley to minus-1 yard passing on six attempts. The Timberwolves were able to pick up 174 yards on the ground, but 91 of those came in the fourth quarter with many of the Wolfpack’s starters on the sidelines.

“It’s a great accomplishment for sure, but it’s so early. We’ve got a long way to go still,” Clymer/Sherman/Panama coach Ty Harper said of the lofty praise statewide. ” … Our coaching staff and our kids have worked really hard. … We just need to keep this thing going.”

“It’s early in the year, but they are a pretty strong force to be reckoned with,” Cattaraugus-Little Valley coach Tim Miller added postgame.

Derek Ecklund led the ground attack for the hosts with 91 yards and two touchdowns while Michael Beatman added 73 yards on just four carries, with one going for a score.

Mason Bestine had 12 tackles to lead a stout Clymer/Sherman/Panama defense that forced Cattaraugus-Little Valley into four negative-yardage plays, three turnovers and four punts.

Robert Overton and Jordan Caron each had eight tackles; Jevan Newman and Ecklund each recovered a fumble; and Zavon Overton had an interception that he returned 26 yards to set up the Wolfpack’s fourth score of the game.

“I really like the way their defense swarms to the ball,” Miller added. ” … They pursue and they’re very aggressive. That really makes it hard as an offense to do anything against them.”

Hunter Furl jumped an out route to intercept Hinsdale’s first pass of the day and return it to the 1-yard line before Jason Miller ran in a touchdown to give the Timberwolves a 6-0 lead just 1:20 into the game.

“Honestly, we haven’t seen them jump an out like that on film … that was the first thing out of Gerrit’s mouth,” Harper said. ” … It’s one throw and he put it behind him.”

Three plays later, facing a third-and-9 from his own 40-yard line, Hinsdale led Cameron Barmore perfectly for a 60-yard touchdown that gave Clymer/Sherman/Panama the lead for good after Garrett McClelland’s first of six successful point-after kicks.

“He’s freakish. He’s got guys hanging off of him and it doesn’t matter,” Harper said of his 6-foot-4 junior wide receiver. “There really is no 50-50 ball with him. If it’s up there, he’s going to get it.”

Beatman followed with a 57-yard touchdown run on the second play of the Wolfpack’s next drive. Hinsdale and Beatman hooked up on a screen pass that nearly went for a 47-yard touchdown less than two minutes later, but a penalty left the hosts with a first down at the 17-yard line. On the next play, Hinsdale threw a touchdown to Mitch Hovey for a 21-6 lead with 2:36 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Ecklund scored on a 5-yard sweep and a 2-yard run up the middle before Hinsdale closed the half by rolling to his right and finding Chance Meeder in the back of the end zone for a 41-6 edge.

“That young man who’s their quarterback started as a sophomore,” Miller said of Hinsdale. “He has really matured a lot in that position and does a nice job of running the show.”

Hovey danced for a 25-yard run down to the 2-yard line before scampering up the middle for a touchdown late in the third quarter, which was played with a running clock.

Cattaraugus-Little Valley broke the 48-point run with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter before Wolfpack backup quarterback Braden Cook later scored on a 1-yard sneak.

“We did manage to move the ball in chunks here and there, but never consistently enough. We shot ourselves in the foot a few times with penalties and put the ball on the ground once or twice,” Miller said. “Against a solid program like that, you can’t afford to make those kinds of mistakes.”

Clymer/Sherman/Panama will likely retain the No. 1 ranking in the state and take it on the road for two weeks, first at Salamanca next Friday night before a non-league date at Depew on Sept. 28.

“A couple of years ago on JV, a lot of these kids were part of an undefeated JV team,” Harper said. “They do a good job of policing themselves. They know what the goals are for this season. They’ve been focused since Day 1 and they want to keep it rolling.”

NOTES: Cattaraugus-Little Valley’s Damion Ly and Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Jordan Smouse were named the Intense Milk/Cross Training Athletics Character Athletes of the Game for their respective teams. … Sam Grey led Cattaraugus-Little Valley with 110 yards and a touchdown while Nick Burroughs added 47 yards on 12 carries.
