Lifeguarding Course Begins Friday At YMCA

Due to the shortage of certified lifeguards in the Jamestown area the Jamestown Y will be offering a fall lifeguarding class. This class will train and certify students in ARC Waterfront Lifeguarding, CPR-PR, First Aid and AED.

The Y will be offering this class at the downtown branch and the class will run Friday from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. as well as Sunday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The final session will be Sunday, Sept. 23 from 8 a.m. until it is finished. Students must attend all classes. This is the final class before summer.

All participants will need to successfully complete the pre-test to be permitted to take the course. The pre-test includes a 550-yard swim, recovering a brick, collecting submerged rings and treading water. The pre-test will be the first part of class on Friday.

Class size is limited, so preregistration is encouraged. The cost for the class is $235 for YMCA members and $285 for potential members. Class cost covers all supplies and certification fees.

Upon successful completion of this class, students will be certified in American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding r 2017, First Aid, CPR-PR and AED. Students must be at least 15 years of age by the final day of class.

The Jamestown YMCA is currently accepting applications for all shifts for lifeguards. The Y will be hiring staff from this class, employment includes free YMCA membership and after six months of employment students will be reimbursed the full cost of class.
