First-year head coach Justin Hanft’s career at Maple Grove got off to a promising start, as the Red Dragons’ offense lit up visiting Springville on the way to a 51-8 victory on Dutch Hollow Road on Friday night.

Maple Grove broke out for four scores in the opening quarter, including runs of 5 yards from both Easton Tanner and Zach Hendrick.

Carson Crist added the second score of the night with a 28-yard scamper while Taige Jones recorded the final score of the opening period with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Springville was held to just 151 yards of offense, including just 79 on the ground, as Caleb Roller led the Red Dragons with 11 tackles. Jake Tomlinson was in on 10 tackles while Daren Vaillancourt was in on eight. Tomlinson, Kyle Trim, DJ Brown and Alex Duncanson each had a sack while Ayden Reagle had a 55-yard interception return.

Crist finished his day with nine completions for 163 yards, launching touchdowns of 10 yards to Vaillancourt and 30 yards to Hendrick.

Of the 228 rushing yards by the Red Dragons, Crist finished with 77, Hendrick 56, Jones 55 and Tanner 40.
