Bernard, Brown Are Trench Trophy Nominees For Week 1
A pair of local athletes are among a group nominated for the Trench Trophy following their high school football Week 1 performances.
Randolph/Frewsburg’s Andrew Bernard and Maple Grove’s DJ Brown are two of the six players nominated to be eligible for year-end induction into the Trench Trophy Hall of Fame.
Bernard was in on 12 tackles while recording two sacks and a fumble recovery in the Cardinals’ 41-12 Class C South win over Cassadaga Valley/Falconer.
Brown was in on five tackles, including a sack, while helping the Red Dragons gain 391 yards of offense, including 228 on the ground, in a 51-8 non-league victory over Springville.
Other Week 1 nominees include Cardinal O’Hara’s Stephen Boyd Jr., Maryvale’s Syncier Middlebrooks, Pioneer’s Lane Patton and Williamsville North’s Josh Walter.
The 2018 Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Lancaster.
The Trench Trophy Award Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, honors football linemen whose contributions on the field are often overlooked when other awards are given. Each week, volunteer scouts made up of community members, coaches and former players observe the games of more than 70 Western New York football programs.
