Step Up To The Plate

Tourney Admission Is Free; Help Is Needed For Pregame Ceremonies

In less than a month, Diethrick Park, above, will be the host for the Babe Ruth 16-18 World Series, which will bring teams from every corner of the United States to Jamestown. Local committee members are looking for public support for the pregame activities, including volunteers for the parade, vocalists to sing the national anthem, honor guards to present the colors and religious leaders to give the invocations. The first pitch for the Babe Ruth 16-18 World Series is less than a month away, and area baseball fans won’t have to spend a dime to gain entry into Diethrick Park.

The free admission is the result of the generosity of area businesses and community organizations that have agreed to sponsor a “day at the park,” for all eight days of the tournament, which will run Aug. 4-11.

The sponsors are the Jamestown Babe Ruth League (Aug. 4); the Resource Center (Aug. 5); One Ball Foundation Inc. (Aug. 6); Chautauqua County Fire Service (Aug. 7); Chautauqua Region Community Foundation (Aug. 8); the Greater Chautauqua Federal Credit Union, Inner Lakes Federal Credit Union, Jamestown Area Community Federal Credit Union, and Southern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union (Aug. 9); Shults Auto Group (Aug. 10); and Chautauqua County (Aug. 11).

The Babe Ruth World Series Committee is also looking for assistance for tournament-related activities, including the parade and pregame ceremonies.

The parade will be held at 9 a.m. Aug. 4 and will begin at Third and Hallock streets and end at Jamestown High School. Volunteers are needed to help organize the parade, beginning at 7:30 a.m., and businesses/organizations are encouraged to walk, ride or organize a float.

Also needed before each game are national anthem vocalists, honor guards to present the nation’s colors, and religious leaders to provide the invocation.
