‘Best Of The Best’ To Hit The Ice In City
Fresh off Independence Day celebrations, a host of talented young hockey players will be traveling to Northwest Arena this weekend as the newly established Jamestown Rebels host their first-ever main camp.
The North American Hockey League franchise will run the invitation-only camp and tryout sessions from Friday through Monday, with approximately 120 players expected to be in attendance comprising eight different scrimmage teams.
“This is an invite-only camp. It’s going to include the team’s draft picks, as well as tenders,” said Southern Tier Xpress general manager Travis Sanders, who is assisting the Rebels in their transition to Jamestown.
NAHL tenders are a type of contract that are signed by players announcing their intention to play for a particular NAHL team and that team only. Once a player signs a tender with an NAHL team, he may not be recruited by another organization within the league, with each team granting 10 tenders which become active on Nov. 1.
“The Rebels have already had their open tryouts, before they announced the move (to Jamestown),” said Sanders.
Sanders added: “With those open camps, they pick the best of the best from those camps. After they make it though the first wave of tryouts, they move on to this main camp. The turnout for these tryouts compared to the Xpress tryouts we have had in the past is a higher number of players and a higher interest level. It’s just that level of hockey that everyone strives to get to.”
Starting from the eight planned teams, the Rebels coaching staff will go through a series of cuts until getting down to just two final teams, which will play in one final game that is scheduled to take place on Monday morning.
Mixed into the weekend’s games will be goalie-only sessions as well as games.
“There will be some players from the Southern Tier Xpress attending the tryout and looking to take advantage of the opportunity to play in this league,” Sanders said.
Admission to fans will be free throughout the weekend, and team management would like to encourage everyone to attend and get a look at some of the players who will be taking to the ice this fall with the Rebels.
Earlier this week the Rebels announced their schedule for this coming season, which will open on the road Sept. 29-30 against the Northeast Generals while the home opener will take place on Friday, Oct. 12 against the New Jersey Titans.
