Gullo Has Tough Day At States

ITHACA — The par 5s weren’t kind to Anthony Gullo on Sunday in the first round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Golf Championships at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club at Cornell University.

The Jamestown senior played the three longest holes in 10-over par, finished with a 91 and stood in a tie for 87th place, 21 strokes behind leader Matt Ferrari of Section I Croton, who shot a 1-under 70.

Starting his round on the 10th hole, Gullo was 6-over after three holes, including a triple-bogey 8 on the par 5, 563-yard 11th. He finished his first nine in 10-over 46.

Gullo steadied himself to start his second nine — was 3-over on his first six holes — but on the par 5 495-yard No. 7 (his 16th hole of the day) he carded an 11. He ended up with a 45 on that nine to finish with a 91 on the 6,854-yard layout.

Orchard Park sophomore Aidan Shaw finished the first day in second place, three shots back of Ferrari while Shaw’s junior teammate Ben Spitz finished tied for fourth at 4-over. Niagara-Wheatfield freshman Anthony Delisanti tied for eighth at 5-over and Kenmore West sophomore Zac Boyes tied for 19th at 7-over. East Aurora/Holland junior Andrew LaCongo was tied for 26th at 8-over; Sweet Home senior Tyler Edholm tied for 54th at 12-over; East Aurora/Holland junior Mitch Jeffe tied for 81st at 17-over; and East Aurora/Holland junior Matt Jeffe finished 85th at 18-over.

Section VI finished the first day tied for third with Section IV at 55-over. Section I leads at 44-over while Section V is in second at 48-over.

Gullo will be back in action today for the second round. He’ll tee off No. 10 at 7:54 a.m.
