Super Late Models To Headline Stateline Opener

BUSTI — Stateline Speedway owner Jim Scott will celebrate his 80th birthday by hosting an 80-lap, $8,000-to-win celebration for the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models on Saturday.

All “6-Pak” classes will be racing with the RUSH Crate Late Models, E-Mods and the RUSH ProMods all running both heats and regular-length features. The Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks and the Challengers will run regular-length features only. As an added bonus, a giant fireworks display will light the skies during intermission.

Jim Scott purchased Stateline Speedway in August 2015 and has operated the speedway continuously since then. The track ran its first race on July 21, 1956, and has hosted Super Late Models throughout its existence. Scott, a resident of Garland, Pennsylvania, began his driving career at nearby Roll-a Bowl (now defunct) in the same year and began racing at Stateline in 1957, racking up 17 feature wins in a career that lasted until 1982. The father of six children (Kim Backstrom, Jim Scott Jr., Robert “Chevy” Scott, Lauri McCanna, Debby Willyoung and David Scott), three of whom, Jim Jr., Chevy and David, have followed in racing, he is a devoted patriarch and grandfather. Two of his grandchildren, Wyatt Scott and Ryan Scott, also drive at Stateline and granddaughter Kylie has raced karts while daughters Kim, Lauri, and Debby all work at the track. Scott’s racing career included wins at nearby Eriez Speedway in Hammot, Pennsylvania and Speedway 7 (now Raceway 7) in Conneaut, Ohio. He also competed at Holland and Perry speedways in New York, and Latrobe Speedway in Pennsylvania. For a time he competed in selected ARCA events at Daytona, Florida, Talledaga, Alabama, and College Station, Texas in Fords owned by Clymer’s Julian Buesink, NASCAR’s 1950 Owners Champion, and Plymouth’s owned by Jim Raid of Westfield.

Over Stateline’s 62-year history, the highlights include a race on the NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) Circuit in 1958 that was won by Corpus Christi driver Lloyd “Shorty” Rollins, who went on to become NASCAR’s first Rookie of the Year and also won one of the 100-Mile qualifying races for the first Daytona 500; a 150-lap “team race” in 1956 won by Joe Sauner and Sammy LaMancuso; a 150-lap Race in 2004 won by Dan Armbruster; and an appearance of nine NASCAR superstars in 1987 won by Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Time trials will start at 6:30 p.m. for Super Late Models. Tickets will be $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, free for veterans with proper military-issued identification, $10 for students ages 11-15 and free for children 10 and under. Pit admission is $35 per person plus a $25 entry fee for Super Late Models.

Stateline Speedway on Kortwright Road in Busti has been in continuous operation since 1956 and is currently owned by Jim and Jean Scott and Dave Turner. Racing is presented every Saturday night during the racing season, this year through Aug. 31 plus special events and practices. The 2018 season will conclude on Sept. 3 with an Enduro.
