Gens Claims Singles Title
Will Be Joined By Sposato, Brown, Gifford At Sectionals
FREDONIA — Neil Gens of Fredonia beat Jameson Sposato of Frewsburg, 6-4, 6-3, in the finals to claim the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association boys tennis singles title Wednesday at SUNY Fredonia.
Gens advanced to the finals by beating teammate Dan Gifford, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals. Sposato advanced by topping Olean’s Mark Brown, 6-4, 6-3, in their semifinal match.
Gens, Sposato, Gifford and Brown will represent the CCAA at the Section VI singles championships Monday and Friday at Lancaster High School.
Gens beat Maple Grove’s Porter DeMink, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round before sweeping Panama’s Carson Heimburg, 6-4, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Sposato beat Southwestern’s Josh Pike, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round and Panama’s Quinn Payne, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Gifford beat Panama’s Nathan Radka, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, in the first round, and Frewsburg’s Tyler Marchincin, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Brown topped Maple Grove’s Chase Boardman, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round and Southwestern’s Eston Shedd, 7-6 (5), 6-0, in the quarterfinals.
The semifinals of today’s doubles championships were also set after a long day of matches Wednesday.
In the top half of the bracket, Panama’s Payne and Heimburg will meet Filip Morawski and Thomas Bates of Olean after the Panthers were able to advance via a 7-5, 6-4 final over Josh Thompson and Caleb Reynolds of Caleb Reynolds of Fredonia. The Olean tandem moved on following a straight-sets win over Ben Cresanti and Wyatt Chriest of Maple Grove, 6-3, 7-5.
The other semifinal will pit Max Kinkela and Jimmy Rush of Fredonia against teammates Augusto Rodriguez and Trevor Napoli. Kinkela and Rush were 7-6 (8), 6-1 winners over Panama’s Radka and Elliot Jackson while Rodriguez and Napoli survived a tough opening-set loss, 2-6, to Southwestern’s Shedd and Pike before recovering with confident wins in the final two frames, 6-4, 6-3.
