Jamestown baseball coach Dave Roehmholdt says Bryce Jackson has never shied away from the big moment.

On Monday afternoon, the senior right-hander embraced it in a big way.

Facing Clarence, the No. 2 large school in Western New York, Jackson scattered six hits over 6• innings to lead the Red Raiders to a 3-1 victory in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 game at Martin Road Complex.

“He works hard at being the best pitcher he can be and he likes the big games,” Roehmholdt said. “He wants the ball.”

All told, Jackson struck out nine, walked one and surrendered only an RBI single by Derek Andrews with one out in the top of the seventh.

“He struck out the first guy (in the game) and you could see had his stuff tonight,” Roehmholdt said of Jackson. “He was hitting his spots, his defense played well behind him and he just gutted it out. He had runners at first and third in one inning and a runner at second in another and he had big strikeouts to end both innings.”

Jackson was removed from the game because of pitch count with one out in the seventh and Drew Boggs got a pop up and a strikeout to earn the save.

The Red Raiders scored a run in the third inning, highlighted by Hunter Beardsley’s infield single, Chris Beardsley’s sacrifice fly and a throwing error. The hosts increased the lead to 3-0 in the fourth after Christian Dolce walked, Andrew Pumford doubled and Jonny Sandstrom scored Dolce on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt. On the throw to first, Pumford also scored to give Jackson some breathing room.

Hunter Beardsley led Jamestown’s offensive attack with three hits, Boggs added a pair of singles and Pumford added the double off Clarence pitchers Alex Croff and Jon White, who combined on a six-hitter.

The victory improved the Red Raiders’ record to 7-7 overall and 2-6 in the division. The Red Devils fall to 12-2 and 9-2. Jamestown returns to action today at Frontier. First pitch is at 5:30 p.m.
