Maple Grove Graduate Finishes Fifth In 5,000 Meters For Edinboro

Hope Pietrocarlo (Maple Grove/Bemus Point) took home fifth place in the 5,000 meters to lead the Edinboro Fighting Scots women’s track and field team to a strong finish on the second day of the 49er Classic at UNC-Charlotte on Friday.

The freshman posted a time of 17.27.36 to finish as the top Division II runner in the race.

Pippy Gerace (Homeschool/Jamestown) and the Cornell women’s hockey team ended their season with a 21-9-3 overall record after falling, 5-4, to Colgate University in Eastern College Athletic Conference semifinal play on March 3.

After falling behind 4-1, Gerace assisted on a pair of goals for the Big Red before a Colgate power play goal with one second remaining regulation finished off the win for the Raiders.

Gerace ended her junior season with a goal and seven assists in 31 games played.

Jaysean Paige (West Virginia University/Jamestown) led the Newcastle Eagles to a 93-70 win over the Bristol Flyers on Friday in British Basketball League play.

Paige poured in 32 points and finished with five assists in the win, and is currently second in the BBL in scoring, averaging 24.4 points per game, while also posting 5.7 assists and 5.1 rebounds. The Eagles are 16-5.

After transferring from Seton Hill, Chrisanna Green (Jamestown/Jamestown) has helped the Virginia State University women’s basketball to a 23-6 record in her junior campaign.

The Trojans fell, 80-55, to Edinboro University in the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament on March 9 with Green scoring six points and adding 12 rebounds.

In her first year with the Trojans Green has averaged a double-double with 13.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game while posting a team-high 21 blocks.

James Rojas (Jamestown/Jamestown) and the Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team now sit at 28-6 overall and 21-5 in NJCAA Region 6 Division I play.

The Blue Dragons dropped an 82-80 loss to Coffeyville CC in the regional finals, despite 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists off the bench from Rojas.

Hutchinson will now host Cape Fear CC at noon on Tuesday.

Collin Stack (Jamestown/Maple Grove) and the University of Maryland/Baltimore County baseball team sit at 4-10 at the start of their season and an even 1-1 in the America East Conference.

The Retrievers fell to Hartford, 14-3, on Friday before rebounding with a 3-2 victory on Saturday with Game 3 scheduled to be played today at 3 p.m.

Stack picked up a hit, with one walk and a strikeout in three appearances on Friday, but was able to highlight the win over the Hawks with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.

Ryan Hetrick (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) has posted an 8-7 record during his freshman season wrestling for the United States Military Academy.

Hetrick has posted a technical fall and two major decisions this season as Army is 3-6 overall heading into this weekend’s NCAA Championships at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Madison Sullivan (Jamestown/Southwestern) and Diamond Fedrick (Jamestown/Southwestern) helped Niagara County CC women’s basketball team to a final record of 19-11 and a 10-5 mark in NJCAA Region 3 Division II play after the Thunder Wolves dropped an 89-54 decision to No. 1 Monroe CC in the regional finals on March 11.

Fedrick finished that game with 14 points and nine rebounds while Sullivan totaled 7 points, six rebounds and two assists.

Fedrick’s sophomore campaign included an average of 15.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest while Sullivan’s second year at Niagara County CC included 5.8 points, 1.6 steals and 4.4 rebounds per game.
