Osula Takes Third, Pownall Is Sixth At Sectionals

AMHERST — Dunkirk/Fredonia/Silver Creek/Forestville/Cassadaga Valley/Brocton’s Bill Osula took third place in 100-yard backstroke for the highest finish among local athletes at the Section VI Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at the University at Buffalo.

Osula finished in 55.86 seconds, less than two seconds behind winner Michael Maurer of Hamburg.

The Narwals junior also took eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.54), just over 1 second behind winner Benjamin Harper of Kenmore.

Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Tyler Ridout took fourth in 1-meter diving with a score of 396.95 while Jamestown’s Alex Aversa was ninth (365.95) and Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s David Marshall was 13th (329.05). Lockport’s Jake Minnick won the event with 491.15 points.

Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Drew Pownall finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.77. Kenmore’s Matthew Walker won the event with a 1:00.23.

Williamsville East won the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.22), in which Jamestown’s team of Brennan Roehmholdt, Joseph Roehmholdt, Matthew Roehmholdt and Kyle Dean finished sixth (1:42.41). Frewsburg/Southwestern’s quartet of Cooper Thomas, Pownall, Nate McDonald and Gannon Moore took 14th, finishing the B Final in 1:49.39.

Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s Cole Manwaring took seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.94), finishing 11 seconds back of winner Liam O’Connell of Hamburg. Teammate Austin Strong was 11th, finishing the B Final in 1:55.40 while McDonald was 15th with a time of 1:58.58 and Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s R.J. Helt was 16th in 1:59.25.

Matthew Roehmholdt placed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.49 seconds, just over 2 seconds behind Harper. Dean was 10th, swimming a 50.55 in the B Final while Manwaring was 14th (51.28).

Strong was 10th in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming the B Final in 5:10.95 while Joseph Roehmholdt was just behind in 11th with a 5:16.64.

Jamestown’s team of Brennan Roehmholdt, Joseph Roehmholdt, Matthew Roehmholdt and Dean took 10th in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a B Final time of 3:24.68. Williamsville East won the event in 3:16.04.

Joseph Roehmholdt took 11th in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing the B Final in 2:11.66. Maurer also won that event in 1:57.10. Dean was 11th in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing the B Final in 22.97 while Matthew Roehmholdt was 13th in 23.30.

Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s team of Elliot Johnson, Justin Wiemer, Strong and Manwaring were 13th in the 200-yard freestyle relay, swimming the B Final in 1:33.83.

Lockport’s Mark Crocker won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.38 seconds.
