Westfield Trims MG; Beatman Lifts Sherman

The Westfield Wolverines basketball team came away with a narrow 64-60 victory over the Maple Grove Red Dragons in a non-league game.

The contest was close the entire way until Westfield (6-4, 2-2) finally outlasted the Red Dragons, thanks to clutch free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines went 9-of-11 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, as five different players scored in the final period for Westfield.

Ryan Jafarjian led the Wolverines with 22 points, along with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Shawn Horr added 14 points, as well as a team-high nine rebounds. Westfield as a team out-rebounded Maple Grove 34-20.

Maple Grove (4-5) was led by Zach Fischer with a game-high 28 points, along with six steals. Peter Auer added 14 points and five assists.

BEATMAN LEADS WAY

FORESTVILLE — Mike Beatman scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lift Sherman to an 82-62 victory over Forestville in a non-league basketball game Saturday.

The Wildcats were particularly hot from the arc, draining 12 treys, including six from Tanner Ramsey (19 points) and five from Beatman. Jared Gleason (19 points) also had a fine game, helping Sherman improve its record to 6-5 overall.

Forestville (4-7) was led by Gavin Christian with 14 points, while Macadam Gadewoltz added 13 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.

POPE, MAJKA SHINE

FOR T’BIRDS

Devin Pope poured in 38 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had seven steals and three assists to lead Chautauqua Lake to a 78-62 victory over Springville.

Kyler Majka added 20 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Nate Adams chipped in 13 points and three assists for the winners, who improved to 8-3.

GIRLS

MAPLE GROVE ROLLS

Maple Grove only led Westfield by two at halftime, but outscored the Lady Wolverines, 36-6, the rest of the game for a 52-18 non-league game at Jamestown Community College.

Marissa Schuppenhauer led the Lady Red Dragons (7-4, 2-1) with 17 points, while teammate Bre Hill had 15 rebounds and 14 points. Courtney Hemminger added 14 rebounds, 10 points, four assists and three steals for Maple Grove.

The Lady Wolverines (4-7, 0-2) were led by Sophia DeMarco’s 10 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Teammate Cheyanna Rivera brought down six rebounds.

SILVER CREEK FALLS

PORTVILLE — Karly Welty scored 18 points and had six steals to lead Portville to an easy 55-21 victory over Silver Creek in Division 1 East action.

The first quarter set the tone for Portville, which snapped a four-game losing streak, as it outscored SC, 20-11, and never looked back.

Sydney Colligan had 14 points, and Bryn Milne and Sierra Keim grabbed eight rebounds for Portville (5-4, 1-1).

Sydney Colligan finished with 14 points as Silver Creek dropped top 0-2 in the league and 6-3 overall.

Abby Rice had seven points and Jayleigh Cruz added six points for Silver Creek (6-2, 0-2).
