Jayhawks Can’t Make Second-Half Run In Loss To Lorain County CC

ELYRIA, Ohio — Lorain County Community College took the lead with 8:57 left in the first half and never relinquished en route to an 88-79 NJCAA nonconference men’s basketball win over Jamestown CC on Sunday afternoon.

Mike Rell led five Commodores in double figures with 19 points while Montez Day added 12, Kevin Kelley and Miles Meredith each had 11, and Daniel Lott scored 10.

“Rell really hurt us in the first half,” Jamestown CC coach George Sisson said. “We didn’t do a good job of guarding him.”

Germaine Wright led the Jayhawks with 19 points while Terrance Cosby added 12 points and 20 rebounds. Tavion King scored 13 points, Chris Robson had 12 and Averi Parker scored 11.

“It’s pretty disappointing when you have five guys score double figures and you still get beat,” Sisson said.

Lorain County CC’s lead grew to as many as nine with 2:46 left in the first half on a Jake Schultz layup before Jamestown CC got it back down to 37-34 at halftime on a Carter Davidson jumper.

An 8-3 run to open the second half put the Commodores back up by eight and their lead grew to as many as 16 with 6:56 remaining on a Thomas Hronis 3-pointer. The Jayhawks got within six on a Cosby layup with 3:42 to go, but were never able to get any closer.

“They’ve played seven games since the new year and we’ve played two games in a month,” Sisson said. “They are a team that has gained a lot of confidence. I felt they were a little more ‘game quicker.’ Our schedule’s been a little weird with two cancellations and the big break.”

Lorain County CC (16-2, 6-1 Region 12 Division III) shot 46.2 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from 3-point range, while Jamestown CC was 38.4 percent from the field and 28 percent from deep. The Commodores also assisted on 15 of their made field goals while the Jayhawks had just eight assists as a team.

“That’s something that has plagued us a little bit this year. We haven’t had good ball movement,” Sisson said. “I thought early in the game we did and we were winning. Then we ended up driving to the rim for some hard shots. We didn’t get rewarded with fouls or finishes.”

Jamestown CC (6-9, 0-5) returns to Region 3 Division II action Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Erie CC at the Physical Education Complex.
