Rodenbaugh Pours In 41 In JCC’s Loss To No. 1 Monroe CC

ROCHESTER — Alexis Rodenbaugh was a two-time all-conference basketball player during her career at North East (Pa.) High School.

A little over a third of the way through her freshman year at Jamestown Community College, Rodenbaugh has been padding her resume even more, helping the Jayhawks get off to an impressive 10-3 start in the first semester.

But nothing compares to what the 5-foot-9 guard did Wednesday night.

Playing at Monroe CC, the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division II, Rodenbaugh poured in 41 points on 19-of-25 shooting from the floor; grabbed 11 rebounds; dished out five assists; and had three steals in a dazzling display of her basketball skills.

Although Jamestown CC fell, 101-89, in the Region 3 Division II contest — the Tribunes’ Sierra Green drilled a school-record 12 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 41 points — the Jayhawks left the Rochester campus in good spirits.

“Right now, I’m the happiest guy north of the Chautauqua ridge,” Jamestown CC coach Travis Wells said.

And rightfully so.

In previous years, Jamestown CC rarely gave Monroe CC much of a test, particularly on the road. Last night, however, it was a totally different story as the Jayhawks raced to a 21-12 lead before settling for a 21-19 advantage after the first quarter.

“The kids played well tonight,” Wells said. “They didn’t get rattled. Sometimes you come up here and you let them rattle you. The kids were very composed tonight.”

And Rodenbaugh was on fire.

“That was a great combination of working on the defensive end and running, and a great combination of her teammates finding her,” Wells said. “She was the recipient of great passes and she played great defense. She got tips, deflections and she was off to the races.”

The difference in the game was Monroe CC’s 17-0 run spanning the first and second quarters that gave it a 54-38 lead at the break. The second half was played on even terms.

“They ‘punched us in the mouth’ and we could have packed it in, but we fought through it,” Wells said. “We got it down to nine a couple times. We just kept working and kept working.”

The Tribunes (15-1) were particularly hot from behind the arc where they connected on 18-of-43 attempts, led by Green’s dozen.

“They were deep,” Wells said. “You have to tip your hat to her. They were 3 or 4 feet behind the 3-point line.”

Lanay Rodney added 26 points and Torrie Cash chipped in with 19 for Monroe CC.

Olivia Lynn turned in an outstanding effort for Jamestown CC, scoring 24 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out three assists.

The Jayhawks (10-3, 4-1) return to action Saturday when they entertain 18th-ranked Lakeland CC at 1 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex.

MEN

JAYHAWKS FALL TO TRIBUNES

ROCHESTER — Jamestown Community College was outscored by 12 in the first half and unable to recover down the stretch in an 86-70 NJCAA Region 3 Division II men’s basketball loss to Monroe CC on Wednesday.

Kewan Platt led a quartet of Tribunes (10-3, 5-0) in double figures with 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Noah West added 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Mike Kelly Jr. had 13 points and Gilberto Cue had 10 points in the win.

The teams were tied at 16 with 13:03 left in the first half before Monroe CC went on a 12-2 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Omari Brown and Kelly.

The Jayhawks (5-8, 0-5) cut the deficit to as few as three on Tavion King’s layup with 4:23 left in the opening 20 minutes and kept it close on D.J. Branch’s jumper to make it 35-30 with 3:24 left. The Tribunes then went on a 9-0 run to go up 14 before King’s layup at the first-half buzzer.

“We had some bad turnovers and gave up some breakaways,” Jamestown CC coach George Sisson said. “Three or four bad possessions in a row led to some easy baskets for Monroe.”

Monroe CC’s lead stayed around double digits throughout most of the second half.

“We were never able to make a run at them,” Sisson said. “When you go to Monroe, that’s a heck of a place to play. They have a real homecourt advantage and they are a talented basketball team.”

Kenny Pitt led the Jayhawks with 15 points to go along with five rebounds while Keshaun Howard had 11 points and six rebounds. King chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.

Monroe CC outrebounded Jamestown CC, 47-33, and held a 20-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

“They go 6-8, 6-7, 6-8 across the front line. With Williams (Overo) out … we gave up height all the way through the roster,” Sisson said. “We battled. The guys competed really hard. We got hurt on the glass a little bit in the second half.”

Jamestown CC returns to action Saturday against Lakeland CC at 3 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex. The Lakers are a Division II program from Region 12.
