Several Local Football Teams Finish Season In Rankings

The end-of-season football rankings were released on Wednesday by the New York State Sportswriters Association, and the Jamestown Red Raiders finished the year as an honorable-mention choice in Class AA.

Tom Langworthy’s squad ended the year at 5-4, including 3-3 in Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division I play, falling to eventual state finalist Lancaster (12-1), which occupied the No. 2 spot while Troy (13-0) out of Section II was at No. 1 after its 41-26 championship win over the Legends.

Troy now leads the way in New York state with a 26-game winning streak.

Also in Class AA, Canisius (8-4) ended the year at No. 11.

In Class A, West Seneca West finished in a tie at No. 1 along with Section VIII’s Garden City, after finishing the year at 13-0 and claiming a state title courtesy of a 14-6 win over No. 3 Yorktown. Also representing Section VI was South Park (9-1) at No. 10.

In Section VI, Class B was led by Cheektowaga (10-2) at No. 4 while Maryvale (8-2) finished in the No. 16 spot and Lackawanna (7-2) at No. 21. The Warriors ended Dunkirk’s 7-2 season with a 52-15 semifinal victory. The Marauders will finish the season at No. 24.

Cleveland Hill (10-2) led the way in Class C for Section VI at No. 4, courtesy of a second consecutive sectional title following a 42-16 win over No. 16 Southwestern (7-3). Silver Creek/Forestville (6-2) finished the year as an honorable-mention selection.

Maple Grove (11-2) finished at No. 2 in Class D after it’s berth to a second consecutive state final, this time a 26-14 win going the way of No. 1 Cambridge (12-1). Franklinville/Ellicottville (9-1) ended at No. 9 while Clymer/Sherman/Panama (6-3) was at No. 17.
