Rojas, Hill Lift JHS Boys To Victory

BUFFALO — The Jamestown High School boys basketball team will enter the New Year with a three-game winning streak.

Marcus Rojas scored 17 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and had three assists to spark the Red Raiders to a 55-46 victory over Edison Tech in the I-90 Showcase at Villa Maria College on Saturday.

Jamestown (6-2) led, 26-21, at halftime and limited the Rochester school to just seven points in the third quarter en route to the win.

“We did a good job defensively on them,” Red Raiders coach Ben Drake said. “They’re a quick team, an athletic team and they’re pretty fast in transition. I knew the key was getting back on defense and protecting the paint, and for the most part we did a pretty good job of that. We didn’t give them a lot of easy ones.”

Matt Hill also turned in a solid performance, drilling four 3-pointers in the first quarter and finishing with 17 points.

“He shot a good percentage tonight and did a good job of running the team from the point,” Drake said.

Jamestown will return to action Tuesday when it entertains Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 rival Lancaster at McElrath Gymnasium. Opening tip is 7:30 p.m.

The Red Raiders will enter that game with their coach feeling pretty good about their performances the last two weeks.

“We’re doing it in a different way this year, because of our personnel and our style is a little bit different at both ends of the floor,” Drake said. “We know we’re not going to outscore teams. In order to be successful, we have to be able to play good half-court defense and then execute in the halfcourt on offense and we’ve gotten better with that. We still have room to grow.”
