Raiders Post Road Win Over Fredonia

FREDONIA — Guards Matt Hill and Elijah Rojas spearheaded a big first quarter and then they turned it over to their teammates in the middle, which led Jamestown to a 57-50 non-league basketball victory over Fredonia on Friday night.

Hill nailed a pair of 3-pointers and Elijah Rojas added one, helping the Red Raiders (2-1) to build a 19-6 lead after the first quarter.

Turnovers — 14 in the first half alone — kept the Hillbillies in the game and they narrowed the gap to 32-25 at the break.

“Those turnovers led to easy points for them at the other end,” Jamestown coach Ben Drake said. “When we were able to get back on defense and set up, we did a nice job on them.”

Speaking of nice jobs, Marcus Rojas finished with 17 points and seven rebounds; Shaheem Freeney chipped in with 11 points and 11 boards; Hill had 11 points; Grant Moore added nine points; and Elijah Rojas chipped in seven points and four assists.

The inside play of Marcus Rojas, Freeney and Moore combined to shoot 13 of 25 from the floor.

“We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well from the perimeter tonight,” Drake said, “but we did a very good job of getting the ball inside. The big guys had 37 of our 57 points.”

Fredonia (0-2) was led by Reid Tarnowski with 19 points and Tyler Putney added 11.

Jamestown lost the junior varsity game, 60-50. Calvin Ricker led the Red Raiders with 12 points.
