Eckwahl Wins Debut On Sherman Bench

SHERMAN — Sherman began its first season under new head coach Emily Eckwahl in style, picking up a 52-42 non-league girls basketball win over Gowanda (1-1) on Wednesday evening.

Eckwahl replaces longtime coach Mel Swanson, who coached for more than 40 years and compiled 607 girls basketball wins in his career, the third most in state history.

Leading the way on the court for Sherman was Maggie Myers with 16 points and 11 rebounds while freshman MacKenzie Gratto also picked up a double-double with a team-high 14 boards to go along with 11 points.

Zoey Charrette added 8 points and five steals for the winners.

Leading Gowanda on the scoresheet was Miya Scanlan with 18 points including four makes from beyond the arc; the freshman also notched three steals.

TROJANS PULL AWAY

RANDOLPH — Southwestern pulled away little by little en route to a 41-29 non-league victory over Randolph.

Izzy Bursch had a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter en route to 12 points while Erin Radack also had two 3-pointers and 12 points for the Trojans (2-0). Alanna Dibble had 12 rebounds while Samika Mathews had eight rebounds and Radack had four steals in the win.

Sydney Hvizdzak led the Cardinals (0-2) with 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals while Joan Adams pulled down 11 rebounds.

FALCONER — Katie Bodenmiller led Westfield/Brocton to a tough road victory to begin the season Tuesday.

Bodenmiller had 20 points and seven steals for the Wolverines in a 48-40 non-league victory over Falconer.

Sophia DeMarco added 12 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals for Westfield/Brocton, which had a 12-point lead at halftime.

Falconer was led Chelsey Vincent’s 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Eighth-grader Sam Snow added seven rebounds.
