Yuchnitz Makes Panama History
BUFFALO — Karianne Yuchnitz made history Friday night at Erie Community College’s Burt Flickinger Center as she swam a time of 23.97 in the 50-yard freestyle to earn the first-ever individual Section VI championship for Panama.
Joining Yuchnitz in the record books were Panama 200-yard freestyle relay teammates Abi Bailey, Leah Saxton and Izzi Bailey as the squad clocked a 1:44.21 to set the new Panthers’ school mark.
Following behind Yuchnitz in the 50 was Natalie Fosberg of Southwestern with a state-qualifying time of 24.83.
Riley Drummond of Fredonia/Dunkirk/Silver Creek/Forestville/Brocton also had herself quite a day in the pool, taking home an individual Section VI title in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.66, followed closely by Allie Stockwell of Jamestown with another qualifying time of 59.77, good for third place. Madison Kramer of Frewsburg was also a top finisher in the backstroke with a seventh-place time of 1:01.06.
Drummond narrowly missed out on a two-win evening as she grabbed second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.74, good for a state-qualifying time, just behind first-place finisher Katie Pollock of Lockport. Following behind Drummond was Southwestern’s Megan Seeley with a 2:15.96.
Leading the Trojans in the pool was sophomore Grace Wood, with her third-place state-qualifying time of 1:57.22 in the 200-yard freestyle.
Wood actually finished that race tied for third with Alexis Trietley of Olean. Wood just narrowly missed out on a qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle with her fourth-place time of 5:20.01.
Rounding out the top individual performances was Abi Lisciandro’s 384.35 points in the 1-meter dive, good for eighth place.
Also in relay action, Southwestern’s 200-yard freestyle team of Fosberg, Maddy Nelson, Seeley and Wood grabbed fifth with a state -qualifying time of 1:40.97.
Following behind the Trojans was Fredonia/Dunkirk/Silver Creek/Forestville/Brocton’s team of Drummond, Grace Mroczka, Mackenzie Quinn and Lillee Gould in sixth with a time of 1:41.82, just missing out on a qualifying time.
Leading local schools in the team standings was Fredonia/Dunkirk/Silver Creek/Forestville/Brocton in seventh with 119 points while Southwestern took 11th with 92.5.
