Xpress Suffer Home Loss To Niagara Falls

The Southern Tier Xpress dug itself a big hole and dropped a 5-1 decision to the Niagara Falls PowerHawks in the North American Tier 3 Hockey League at the Northwest Arena on Thursday.

Niagara Falls scored twice in the first period on goals by Brandon Tripi (from Anthony Tomassi and Justin King) and Frankie Bodami (from Andrew Logar and Tomassi).

In the second period, the Powerhawks got another at 35 seconds when Stephen Minichiello tallied from Brandon Schweickert and Bodami to make it 3-0. Michael Olszewski scored from Brandon Snyder at 2:51 and Michael Thornton completed the scoring for the visitors with an unassisted goal at 4:55.

The Xpress ruined goalie Kris Augustine’s shutout in the third period when Mickenzie Restle got his 10th goal of the season shorthanded at 14:58 from Stuart Pearson.

Augustine stopped 59 shots in picking up the win for Niagara Falls while Ryan Pascarella and Brandon Heacock combined for 33 saves for the Xpress.

Tomassi earned the second star behind first star goalie Augustine.

The loss dropped the Xpress to a 6-11 while the win lifted Niagara Falls to an 8-6-1 record.

Southern Tier now heads to the road to play the Lansing Wolves on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m.
