Alexis Rodenbaugh is the only member of the Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team not from Western New York.

Through nine games this fall, the freshman from North East, Pennsylvania is having no problem fitting in with her teammates.

Rodenbaugh kept up her stellar play Wednesday evening, scoring 21 points to go along with 13 rebounds, leading five Jayhawks in double figures en route to a 94-72 NJCAA Region 3 Division II victory over Niagara County CC that kept the Jayhawks undefeated (3-0) at the Physical Education Complex this season.

“She played a heck of a game. That was her best game of the year by far,” Jamestown CC coach Travis Wells said of Rodenbaugh’s night. “That’s what we expect from her. She was even under the weather a little bit, but she was a player today.”

Freshman Taylor Phelps (Sherman/Chautauqua Lake) came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points, grab eight rebounds and hand out four assists for Jamestown CC (7-2, 3-0).

“Taylor came in and was a huge lift,” Wells said. “She came in and was excellent.”

Reigning Region 3 women’s Athlete of the Week Olivia Lynn (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) had 14 points and nine rebounds; sophomore Emilee Sperry (Panama/Panama) had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists; and sophomore Hayden Burgeson (Lakewood/Southwestern) chipped in 11 points and two assists in 16 minutes off the bench.

The game was a homecoming for a pair of Thunderwolves (4-4, 1-2) as sophomore Diamond Fedrick (Jamestown/Southwestern) had 14 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Madison Sullivan (Jamestown/Southwestern) had 9 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Neraelyn Trueheart (Amherst/Sweet Home) led Niagara County CC with 17 points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and three assists while freshman Dakaylah Winfield (Grand Island/Grand Island) added 13 points.

Freshman Nicole Johnson (Panama/Panama) had 5 points while Lynn and Rodenbaugh each had 4 as the Jayhawks held a 17-12 lead after the opening quarter. In the second quarter, Sperry and Phelps each had a pair of 3-pointers while Burgeson also found the range from deep as Jamestown CC’s lead grew to 22 at halftime. The Jayhawks were 5 of 14 in the first half and 9 of 26 for the game from 3-point range.

“It’s so nice for Emilee not having to worry about being the only scorer,” Wells said of Sperry. “Teams would just target her last year and she had to work so hard. Now she can just play the game and have fun. She doesn’t have as much pressure.”

Niagara County CC closed the third quarter on a 13-5 run, including the final seven points of the quarter, to cut its deficit to 14 with 10 minutes remaining.

“They got it down and the girls responded,” Wells said. “They got it back up there.”

Rodenbaugh scored six points during an 8-2 run opening the fourth quarter, the final bucket coming off a nice pass from freshman Haley Hettenbaugh (Kennedy/Randolph) that coaxed Thunderwolves coach Nate Beutel into a timeout down 20 points with 7:21 remaining.

“It’s weird because it feels like we could’ve played better. We had some turnovers that we shouldn’t have made and some sloppy passing, but you look at the scoreboard and it’s 90-some points,” Wells said. “We’ve still got a ways to go. We still have to work on some defense and some offense.”

The Jayhawks will look to continue their strong start to the season with another Region 3 home game against Genesee CC next Wednesday.

“3-0 in the region,” Wells said, “that’s where you want to be.”
