Trojans, Titans Earn No. 1 Seeds
Southwestern and Franklinville/Ellicottville will open as No. 1 seeds when the Section VI football playoffs get underway Friday night.
The Trojans earned the No. 1 seed in Class C South and will host the North Division’s No. 4 seed Akron at 7 p.m. Friday night at Charles A. Lawson Field. The game will be a rematch of last season’s quarterfinal, which Southwestern won, 49-7.
The Titans earned the No. 1 seed in Class D and will host No. 8 Portville on Friday night in Ellicottville. Franklinville/Ellicottville did not face the Panthers during the regular season, but outscored its opponents 288-79 on its way to a perfect 7-0 record.
No. 2 Maple Grove will host No. 7 Randolph/Frewsburg at 7 p.m. Friday on Dutch Hollow Road. Just two weeks ago, the Red Dragons beat the Cardinals, 39-6. During last year’s semifinals, Maple Grove beat Randolph, 28-0.
No. 5 Salamanca will travel to Mayville and face No. 4 Chautauqua Lake on Friday night at 7 p.m. The Warriors and Thunderbirds did not face each other this season. Last year, as Class C schools, Chautauqua Lake was shut out by Cleveland Hill in the quarterfinals while Salamanca did not qualify for the playoffs.
The other Class D game will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Clymer as No. 3 Clymer/Sherman/Panama hosts No. 6 Cattaraugus-Little Valley. The Wolfpack beat the Timberwolves, 41-18, during Week 2 this season. Both teams lost their quarterfinal playoff games a season ago.
No. 5 Jamestown will travel to No. 4 Clarence for a Class AA quarterfinal Friday night at 7 p.m. The Red Raiders shut out the Red Devils, 37-0, at Strider Field during Week 3 of this season. The teams also met during last year’s quarterfinals with Clarence, then a No. 1 seed, beating No. 4 Jamestown, 35-8.
In Class C, the South Division’s No. 2 seed Silver Creek/Forestville will host the North Division’s No. 3 seed JFK at 7 p.m. in Silver Creek on Friday. The Black Knights were a Class D school last season and lost to Franklinville/Ellicottville, 56-33, in the semifinals. JFK did not qualify for the Class C playoffs a year ago.
South Division No. 3 Cassadaga Valley/Falconer will travel to Wilson for the North Division’s second-seeded Lakemen on Friday at 7 p.m. The Golden Cougars did not qualify for last season’s playoffs while Wilson was a No. 2 seed and lost to No. 3 Allegany-Limestone, 12-7, in the quarterfinals.
No. 3 Dunkirk will host a Class B quarterfinal Friday night against No. 6 Albion at 7 p.m. The Marauders advanced all the way to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinals last year, beating Maryvale, Lackawanna and Cheektowaga on the way. Albion did not qualify for the 2016 playoffs. In Week 6 of this season, Dunkirk edged the Purple Eagles, 18-15.
Other No. 1 seeds are Lancaster in Class AA, Grand Island in Class A North, West Seneca West in Class A South, Lackawanna in Class B and Cleveland Hill in Class C North.
