LAKEWOOD — Mikayla Johnson of Southwestern, Bernadette Gens and Kelsey Vianese of Fredonia, and Jenna Hayes of Maple Grove have reached the Final Four in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Tennis Singles Championships.

Playing at the Lakewood YMCA on Wednesday, the quartet not only advanced to Friday’s semifinal round, but they also guaranteed themselves a berth in the Section VI Championships, which will be held at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville next week.

Johnson, the CCAA’s top seed, lost just four games on the day, downing Emma Collins of Maple Grove, 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 16; and then upending Alicia Kluck of Fredonia, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

Gens, who entered the tournament as the second seed, had an even easier time as she posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hiba Munir of Southwestern in the Round of 16 and then upended Autumn Shuskie of Chautauqua Lake, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Vianese advanced courtesy of a 6-2, 6-0 victory over MacKenzie Windus of Olean in the Round of 16 and a 6-1, 6-1 win over Olivia Persia of Southwestern in the quarterfinals.

The most improbable run to the Final Four was by Hayes, who began the day with a 10-3 victory over Corinne Elliott of Chautauqua Lake in the play-in round.

Then Hayes really went to work.

In the Round of 16, she outlasted Macy Youngberg of Falconer, 7-6 (7-4 in the tie-breaker), 7-6 (7-3 in the tie-breaker), and followed that with a come-from-behind 6-7 (4-7 in the tie-breaker), 6-4, 6-4 win over Zayba Chauhdry of Olean in the quarterfinals.

The four singles players will return to the Lakewood YMCA at noon Friday for the semifinal and final rounds. The CCAA Doubles Championships begin at 11 a.m. today.
