Locals Shine At Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic

BRADFORD, Pa. — Football players from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties were well-represented at the 44th annual Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic on Saturday night at Parkway Field.

The football game, which pits recently graduated seniors from New York and Pennsylvania, was won by the team south of the border, 48-30.

Representing New York from The Post-Journal’s circulation area were Cordell O’Brien, Caleb Caldwell, Jarod Sanfilippo and Hunter Whippo, Frewsburg; Wyatt Perry, Chris Johnson and Casey Williams, Southwestern; Jake Beaver, Dylan Williams and Marshall Johnson, Randolph; Kameron Alexander, Ethan Francis, Charlie Valone and Marcus Jones, Gowanda; Liam Wyatt, Ellicottville; Drew Stevens, T.J. Southwick and Jason Opferbeck, Cattaraugus-Little Valley; and Derek McClure and Xander Edstrom, Salamanca.

Among the more impressive efforts for the New York squad came from a Randolph-Frewsburg connection.

Randolph quarterback Beaver completed a 10-yard pass to Frewsburg’s O’Brien. O’Brien then lateraled to Bears’ teammate Caldwell, who raced 60 additional yards for the touchdown.

O’Brien finished with five receptions for 94 yards and Beaver completed 6 of 13 passes for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Southwestern’s Johnson recovered a fumble and Casey Williams, also of Southwestern, rushed for 30 yards on six carries.

The New York team was led by head coach Sean Gabel of Gowanda and assistants Lawrence Wheeler, Bryan Mentley and Charles Ross Jr. of Gowanda, and Robert Fetterick of Fredonia.

Local officials working the game were referee Vince Joy, umpire Keith Fish, back judge Ray Spacht, line judge Pat Shepherd and head lineman Karl Germain.
