DuBois, Bates Among Stars Honored

After he helped lead the Maple Grove Red Dragons all the way to the Far West Regionals on the baseball diamond this spring, Dalton DuBois was recognized by the New York State Sportswriters Association as a Third-Team All-State selection in Class C.

DuBois, who will continue his academic and athletic career at Monroe Community College, hit .412 during his senior campaign with three home runs and 12 RBIs for the Red Dragons. He had an on-base percentage of .555 and a slugging percentage of .794 while scoring 14 runs and stealing seven bases. He also was an honorable-mention selection on the All-Western New York team.

Maple Grove took down Barker in the Section VI Class C2 championship before downing Allegany-Limestone in the Section VI Class C overall championship.

Several other local student-athletes from the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association joined DuBois on All-State teams.

Silver Creek/Forestville’s Sam Mullen was honored with a spot on the Second Team in Class C.

Mullen hit .339 this spring with 19 total hits, including five doubles. In addition, he drove in a team-high 14 runs and scored 13 runs. Defensively, he only committed four errors and had a fielding percentage of .970. He was selected to the All-WNY Second Team as well.

Silver Creek/Forestville fell to Allegany-Limestone in the Section VI Class C1 final.

Westfield’s Max Bates, who was voted as the CCAA Division II West Most Valuable Player, was selected to the Fourth Team in Class C. Bates was also named the Division II West MVP in the 2017 Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties Senior All-Star Classic at Diethrick Park after he launched a solo home run to left-center field.

According to MaxPreps, the Westfield senior hit .421 with 16 hits, four home runs and 12 RBIs. Bates was also named to the honorable-mention All-WNY team.

In Class B, Gowanda senior Matt Kruszka found a spot on the Fourth Team.

The shortstop hit .457 throughout his sixth season at the varsity level for the Panthers and was selected to the All-WNY First Team. He starred in the 2017 Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties Senior All-Star Classic at Diethrick Park, connecting for a triple and a double en route to being named MVP for the Division I East team.

Gowanda fell to Tonawanda, 5-3, in the Section VI Class B2 semifinals.

Two Fredonia players were recognized in Class B: Ryan Mroczka (Fifth Team) and Reid Tarnowski (Sixth Team).

Mroczka was voted on by league coaches as the CCAA Division I West Player of the Year. He also earned an honorable-mention spot on the All-WNY team.

On the season, Mroczka hit .403 with 25 RBIs, five doubles, one triple and two home runs. In league play, the catcher hit a league-best .486 for the Hillbillies, who eventually lost in the Far West Regionals to Livonia.

Tarnowski starred on the hill for Fredonia, compiling a 7-1 overall record, including playoff wins against Wilson and Royalton-Hartland. He pitched to an ERA of 1.38 in 45ª innings with a total of 67 strikeouts, including a Fredonia single-game school record of 18 against Maple Grove..

Offensively, Tarnowski hit .347 with 15 RBIs. He scored 17 runs from the No. 2 spot in the batting order and earned an honorable-mention spot on the All-WNY team.

Other players to earn all-state recognition from the CCAA are Olean’s Garrett Boldt (Second Team) in Class A, Allegany-Limestone’s Zach Hemphill (Fifth Team) in Class C, Allegany-Limestone’s Ryan Schlosser (Fifth Team) in Class C, Portville’s Nick Stein (Sixth Team) in Class C, North Collins’ Brandon Zielinski (First Team) in Class D and North Collins’ Dylan Winter (First Team) in Class D.
