Leary Takes First Summer Tri-Series Race
The Southern Tier Triathlon Club held its first race of the Summer Tri-Series in Cassadaga on Wednesday, sponsored by the Jamestown Cycle Shop.
Rob Leary of Fredonia was the overall winner, crossing the line in 57:31 while Mark Wilson of Randolph was second in 57:48.
Mindy Lawson-Crabtree of Frewsburg was the top female, finishing in 1:06.48, while Matt Gronquist of Fredonia was fourth overall and the third male to cross in 1:08.20. Pamela Benchley of Dunkirk was the second-place female in 1:18.35 while Stephanie Wright of Jamestown was third in 1:28.15.
Marc Uhteg of Chaffee was the top 45-49-year-old male in 1:15.12 and Jeff Carlson of Jamestown was the top 60-64-year-old male in 1:22.50. Anna Arnn of Chautauqua was the first 20-24-year-old female to finish with a time of 1:43.13.
Any level athlete is invited to participate. This sprint triathlon consists of a 400-yard swim, 13-mile bike ride and 2-mile run. Upcoming race dates will be July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 1.
Races are USAT sanctioned and will begin at 5:45 p.m. Transition will open at 4 p.m. Start and finish will be on Park Avenue at the Cassadaga Beach, one block from Route 60 off of Maple Avenue.
Overall and age group awards will be presented at each race for 19-and-Under through 85-plus. Cost of each race will be $50 for individuals or $75 for teams. Southern Tier Triathlon Club membership is available at $120 which covers the cost of all four races.
There will be a potluck dinner and awards ceremony following the race. Plates, drinks and hot dogs will be provided. Bring a dish to pass as well as family and friends to cheer you on.
