Big Third Inning Carries Dunkirk
BEMUS POINT — Dunkirk scored four runs in the third inning, highlighted by Alexis Tofil’s two-run double, to pull away from Maple Grove in an 8-2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West softball win Friday.
Emma Newton reached on an error to open the inning before Monica Pokoj’s single. Kymilondjra Nance followed with a walk before Tofil broke the game open. Tofil eventually came around to score on Alexis Ruiz’s single before Mackenzie Gugino scored on an error.
Nance tripled and scored in the fourth inning and Emilee Hanlon hit a solo home run in the seventh to close the scoring for the Marauders.
Elise Swanson singled and scored on Meghann Nolan’s double in the first inning before Allison Johnson tripled and scored on Katelyn Knight’s single in the fourth inning for the Red Dragons.
Pokoj earned the win, striking out eight and walking none for Dunkirk.
Lynne Nordin and Alissa Weaver split time in the circle for Maple Grove, combining for eight strikeouts.
Hanlon finished with three hits while Nance, Tofil and Ruiz each had two for the Marauders.
Swanson, Johnson and Knight each had two hits for the Red Dragons.
FIRST INNING CARRIES PANTHERS
FREWSBURG — A four-run first inning, highlighted by a a two-run home run from Allyson Haskell, allowed Franklinville to down Frewsburg, 4-2, in a Division 2 East battle.
Carolyn Wright added an RBI single in the big first inning while Haskell tossed a complete game in the circle, struck out 13 and only surrendered four hits for Franklinville (3-0, 1-0).
MaKena Adams launched a home run in defeat for Frewsburg (1-5, 0-1) and also came through with an RBI double. Kaitlyn Blanchard and Emily Zamborik also singled.
