Some Of The Best From Night 1 At JCC

Some notes gleaned while sitting courtside on the first night of Section VI basketball semifinals at Jamestown Community College on Monday night.

Move of the Night — That goes to Sam Flanders of Allegany-Limestone. The sophomore guard drove hard into the frontcourt, and — upon reaching the foul line — dribbled behind his back, took another dribble and laid the ball into the hoop.

Head of the Class — The Section VI boys basketball program lists the leading scorers in Western New York history heading into the 2016-17 season, as compiled by Paul Hutzler.

Chautauqua County is well represented.

In fact, two players are listed in the top 10 — Jamestown High School graduate Maceo Wofford (2,259 points) is No. 7 and Fredonia grad Michael Heary (2,235) is No. 8 — while another, Maple Grove’s Chris Secky (2,067), is No. 11, one spot and 1 point ahead of a guy named Christian Laettner.

The all-time leader heading into the season was Ritchie Campbell (2,355), who played at DeSales and Burgard from 1987-90. Falconer’s Mike McGinnis (1,707) and Jamestown’s Justin Johnson (1,670 points) are also among the all-time leaders.

Best Pass — That’s an easy one. Portville’s Nick Stein delivered a three-quarter-court bounce pass that hit teammate Brendan Tobola in stride as he drove to the basket. Fouled on the layup attempt, Tobola hit both free throws.

That’s Entertainment — Props to the Clymer Central School pep band for their musical talents throughout the nightcap between the Pirates and rival Sherman, including a rocking drum solo at halftime. Panama Central also has an outstanding band, which will be performing later in the week when the Lady Panthers take the court at the Physical Education Complex. As a former band member at Jamestown High School back in the stone age, I’m a strong advocate of showcasing music at sporting events. It’s too bad more schools with band programs don’t do the same thing. It adds to an already great atmosphere.
