Kemp’s Late Bucket Lifts Jayhawks To Overtime Victory

The Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team found a way Wednesday night.

Finally.

In a season in which the Jayhawks have lost six games by seven points or less, including two by a single point, and stayed in most of their other setbacks until faltering late, they weren’t about to suffer that same fate on Sophomore Night at the Physical Education Complex.

Taking a feed from freshman Tyler Moffe, sophomore Brandon Kemp converted a jump hook from the low block with 6.8 seconds remaining in overtime to send Jamestown CC to a 72-71 NJCAA Region 3 Division II victory over Genesee CC.

Genesee CC had time to get off a shot after Kemp’s bucket, but Brandon Peters’ 3-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer, sending the Jayhawks swarming onto the court in celebration.

The win improved Jamestown CC’s record to 16-12 overall and 5-5 in the region heading into their regular-season finale against the CC of Beaver County at 5 p.m. Friday, back at the Physical Education Complex.

Genesee CC, meanwhile, fell to 17-13 and 7-3.

That puts the Cougars into second place behind Niagara County CC, which knocked off Mercyhurst North East, 93-85, last night. There was no score available at deadline for the Monroe CC-Erie CC game. Both those teams were both 5-4 in the region entering that contest.

The Jayhawks evened their Region 3 record, courtesy of a balanced attack on offense combined with a defense that kept the Cougars 16 points under their scoring average. And, most importantly, Jamestown CC made just enough plays at crunch time to come away with a much-needed win.

First, sophomore Michael Bush (13 points, 6 assists) calmly drilled a pair of free throws with 9.5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game, 66-66, and then Moffe did a nice job of defending a jumper by Genesee CC’s Ladji Fofana (14 points, 10 rebounds) that was off the mark, sending the game to an extra session.

In overtime, the Cougars led by as many as five points, thanks to a three-point play by Fofana and a bucket by Rahmel Thompson (14 points, seven rebounds), but the Jayhawks kept their composure as Bush nailed a jumper and Kemp (8 points, 11 rebounds) scored on a nice feed from sophomore Derek Ice (11 points, four assists) that cut the deficit to, 71-70 with under two minutes remaining. The score remained that way until Moffe found Kemp open down low and the latter converted to send the Jayhawks to the victory.

Joining Bush and Ice in double figures for Jamestown CC were Dashawn Branch with 13 points, Jean Toussaint with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Moffe with 11 points.

DeJean Ellebb had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Genesee CC. Brian Fobbs added 13 points.
