JCC Women Can’t Hold Lead In Final Minute
The Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team had the momentum and the lead late in Sunday’s non-conference game against Villa Maria.
But the Jayhawks couldn’t finish the deal as they were outscored 8-0 in the final minute and suffered a 65-60 loss at the Physical Education Complex.
The setback dropped Jamestown CC to 5-9 heading into its Region 3 opener Wednesday.
It could have been so much different for the Jayhawks.
Trailing for most of the game, the hosts used a 16-2 run during a five-minute span late in the fourth quarter to transform a 55-44 deficit into a 60-57 lead following a putback by Tayler Morrison. During that surge Emilee Sperry and Natalie Houle both drilled a pair of 3-pointers and Sydney Wight added another jumper.
Armed with the three-point lead, Jamestown CC was on the verge of its second straight victory.
Then, it all came apart.
Shaquana Owens drilled a 3-pointer from the corner with 34 seconds remaining to tie the game, 60-all, and, after a timeout, Villa Maria forced a turnover and Dominique Davis hit a jumper to give the visitors the lead for good.
The Jayhawks missed a shot on their next possession and Villa Maria was able to hold on for the win. Jayvonna Kincannon closed out the scoring with a 3-point play with a second remaining.
Owens led Villa Maria with 26 points, eight rebounds and six steals; Kincannon added 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists; and Davis chipped in with 10 points.
Sperry, who was 5 of 10 from the arc, paced the Jayhawks with 21 points and 10 rebounds; and Morrison chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.
NOTES: Leah McQuiller had five points and 10 rebounds; and Nina Cray had eight points and five steals for Villa Maria. … Wight had nine rebounds, while Hayden Burgeson pulled down six rebounds. … Jamestown CC returns to action Wednesday when it entertains Mercyhurst North East. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
