Fordham Remains Unbeaten In A-10 With Win Over St. Bonaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE – Atlantic 10-leading Fordham kept its conference record unblemished Sunday afternoon at the Reilly Center, getting past the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team 60-44.

Fordham improves to 15-5 overall and 6-0 in A-10 play while St. Bonaventure now stands 6-12, 1-5.

Three Rams players scored in double figures as Lauren Holden posted 17 points while Danielle Burns and G’mrice Davis scored 16 points apiece.

Gabby Richmond again paced the Bonnies with her effort of 16 points and seven rebounds and Jalisha Terry added 10 points.

“I thought our kids did a good job of being active and flying around. (Fordham) had 26 points in the first half and three of those buckets were semi-contested threes and to their credit they knocked them down,” head coach Jesse Fleming said. “We were still in the game and got it close in the third, but again we just stopped scoring.”

Early on, the Bonnies held the Rams at bay by forcing four turnovers in the visitors’ first five possessions. Neither team found much offensive footing early as the Bonnies owned a 10-7 edge following the first quarter after forcing Fordham into 10 turnovers for the period.

A second quarter scoring drought from St. Bonaventure allowed Fordham to move ahead.

Though the Rams went just 2-of-9 from the floor during the opening 10 minutes, they improved to 7-of-14 in the second quarter as the Bonnies suffered a long scoring drought. Bona missed its first seven field goal attempts of the period as Fordham broke off a 9-0 run for a 16-10 lead.

Sarah Hart’s layup at the 3:03 mark of the second finally ended Bona’s cold snap, but Burns was getting hot from long range from the other end, sinking three triples during the quarter for a 22-14 advantage.

Terry gave the Bonnies life before intermission, drilling a 30-footer before the buzzer for a 26-22 halftime score.

Another jumper from the freshman began the second half, pulling Bona within 26-24, and the difference was still just 33-30 with 5:56 remaining in the third.

From there, though, the Rams ended the third quarter on an 11-2 run and opened their lead to 15 following a trey off the fingertips of Holden to open the fourth period scoring. The Bonnies could get no closer than a dozen the rest of the way.

“They were a little loose with the ball to start and we were really good in the gaps early on in any penetration,” Fleming said. “I thought they were just a little cleaner with the ball during the second half. They went a little more set-based and didn’t drive as much; that was really the key difference in the second half.”

Hart added eight points for the Bonnies.

St. Bonaventure hits the road again this week, playing at UMass on Thursday with tipoff scheduled for 11 a.m. in an education day special.

GAME NOTES:

Mckenna Maycock (Randolph) had two points, three rebounds, one assist, one block and three steals.

Fordham shot 42 percent (21-50) for the game while the Bonnies were at 37.5 percent (18-48).

Fordham owned a 38-25 advantage on the boards, though Davis, the league’s leading rebounder at 12.5 per game on the year, had just seven.

Bona’s Mariah Ruff was held scoreless for the first time in 62 games.

Imani Outlaw had four points and two rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench.

Richmond has scored in double figures 12 times this season, including seven out of the last eight games.
