At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Jamestown, Megan Zimba presented a program on her experience as an exchange student to Argentina. The club had sponsored her exchange. Megan, the daughter of Karen Zimba and Frank Zimba and is currently a freshman at McGill University.
The year she spent as an exchange student, Megan lived with two host families and participated in two trips in addition to her educational experience. The trip to the south included: whales, penguins, Perito Moreno glacier, the Chilean border, a ferry ride across the Straits of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, a dog sled ride, Larch park and a chocolate factory. In the north tour, the students visited Minas de Wanda (silver mines), Iguazu Falls (taking a boat ride under the falls and a tour into the jungle), visiting the three borders, salt field exploration, Talampaya National Park, Cerro Aconcagua and visiting many wineries and Puente del Inca.
Each year, local Rotaries sponsor students to participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange, a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as international students, living in host family homes. More than 8,000 students participate each year. By sharing their own culture and embracing a new one, students aged 15-19 help foster global understanding - and learn a great deal about themselves and their home country in the process. Anyone interested in learning more can write the Rotary Club of Jamestown at PO Box 454, Jamestown 14702-0454.
