Joyce Sylvia Cowan, 80, a resident at Heritage Green, formerly of Howard Avenue, West Ellicott, passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, in WCA Hospital.
She was born June 30, 1933, in Ellington, N.Y., the daughter of the late Hoyt H. and Onnie Belle Blair Hagerdon.
Joyce was a 1951 graduate of Randolph Central School and attended Jamestown Business College. She retired from the former Borden Inc. in Randolph, where she was an executive secretary for the can and machinery division.
She and her late husband Frank were members of the First Baptist Church in Randolph. Joyce also had been the pianist at the former Steamburg Free Church. She enjoyed reading Christian books and traveling.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Laura Leigh Roach of Woodword, Okla.; a grandson, Leroy VanGuilder of Elizabethtown, Tenn.; four greatgrandchildren: Rhavin and Resse Roach, Declin VanGuilder and Morgan Bingham; two stepsons; Brad (Melissa) Cowan of Jamestown, and Chris (Dawn) Cowan of Glens Falls, N.Y.; a stepdaughter Michelle "Missy" (Dan) Wysocki of Cherry Creek; eight stepgrandchildren; and six step greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Frank Cowan, whom she married on April 13, 1984, and who preceded her on Nov. 25, 2008; a daughter, Sylvia Carrell in 2008; a grandson, Richard VanGuilder in 1988; and siblings: Ralph and Ida Hagerdon.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 9, 2013), in the First Baptist Church in Randolph. John Knowles Congdon will officiate. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery in Ellington.
Arrangements are entrusted to the VanRensselaer and Son Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Randolph. The family will receive friends at the church from 1011 a.m. on Saturday.
