ZumbaKids classes will be offered on Saturday mornings from 9:30-10:30 a.m. from Nov. 2 through Dec. 7 at the Jamestown YMCA.
Based on the global dance-fitness brand that pioneered "exercise in disguise," Zumba Kids brings children aged 7 to 12 years together to play and express themselves with kid-friendly routines and activities custom designed for them. Kids participate in this rockin', high-energy fitness party with all the music they love, and discover new styles of music, cultures, and rhythms as they move to many different dance styles, including cumbia, salsa, reggaeton, and hip-hop.
Parents will love this program because of the effects it has on kids. Participation in ZumbaKids classes can increase their focus and self-confidence, boost metabolism, and enhance coordination. A typical ZumbaKids class starts with a warm up to get their bodies moving. The next step is to get them involved with the music and having fun. Classes also include games, breakdowns of the steps, water breaks and even brief discussions of healthy habits, geography, and different cultures.
ZumbaKids licensed instructor Cindy McIntyre will lead the class by adapting Zumba moves, teaching choreography, and playing fitness games such as freeze dance or Starmaker. "Games and dance battles are included in the hour long class as it is important to make fitness fun and not a chore," states McIntyre. "We make the moves child-friendly, remove the hip-shaking and other adult steps, and keep the dancing to natural movements."
The class is designed for children ages 7-12 years, with consideration given to 5 and 6 year olds with the permission of the instructor. No previous dance experience is needed.
