MAYVILLE - Each year a unique lawn mower run is held in memory of Jack Carlson to benefit Hospice of Chautauqua County. Carlson would often ride around the village of Mayville on his John Deere tractor and mow his neighbors' lawns whenever they needed for free. During these lawn mowing treks, Carlson would often stop at the American Legion Post 493. Soon, other tractors would join his in the lot. Carlson succumbed to cancer, but the fundraising event he inspired continues on in his memory raising dollars for Hospice.
This year, on Saturday, the fun will once again start and finish at the American Legion Post 493, 144 S. Erie St., Mayville. Last year's run drew in more than 125 riders and raised $4,730.
This year, registration is just $15 and starts at 9 a.m. at the American Legion. The fleet of lawn mowers departs at noon and will follow a predetermined course on Rails To Trails property, with scheduled stops to draw their poker cards at area establishments including the House on the Hill, Watermark, Lakeview Hotel, Boardwalk, Webb's, VFW and Chautauqua Suites before completing its course at the legion, for prizes and more fundraising efforts.
Food, beverages and giveaways will be held at the legion for riders and nonriders. Music by Flash Jordan will be from 5-8 p.m.
