SHERMAN - The Sherman Central School district is on course to have its new APPR plan implemented for the coming school year.
At Monday's Board of Education Meeting, Kaine Kelly, Sherman superintendent, reported that the district has been working toward getting its revised APPR plan recertified by the Aug. 31 deadline.
Having an Annual Professional Performance Review plan in place is mandatory in order for the district to continue to receive state aid. According to Kelly, the board has completed its negotiations, received its revisions and resubmitted its plan for approval. He said there is another option if, for some reason, the district is unable to get its new plan recertified by the end of the month.
"A lot of districts are scrambling to get their APPR plans rolled over or recertified, or risk losing state aid," Kelly said. "If we don't get word back from the state in time, because I guess there's kind of a logjam there, we're going to go back and choose another option - meaning we're still in negotiations to roll our plan over from last year to keep our state aid."
Kelly said the district received a call from its plan reviewer Wednesday, and is hopeful to head into the coming school year with its new plan in place.
Also included in Kelly's superintendent report to the board was: an update on the district's building project, which is expected to be completed before the start of the school year; a recap on the district's third- through eighth-grade ELA and math scores, which were released earlier this month; and looking into replacing the aging sound system in the auditorium.
New business present on Monday's agenda included resolutions to: approve Committee on Special Education and Committee on Preschool Special Education members; re-establish the Audit Committee; perform an annual review of district plans and handbooks; ratify Comparative Effectiveness Research Fund fees; approve the Uniform Notice of Claim Act; conduct CSE placements; and transfer district funds for the purpose of closing out the Tax Certiorari Reserve.
Personnel items included appointments in extracurricular, substitute, transportation manager, cleaner and bus driver positions. Volunteer coaches, a coaching internship and a 10-month continued employment request were also discussed.
