The Joy Ride, a benefit motorcycle ride to benefit the T.J. Joy Fund, will be held Aug. 24 starting from Harley Davidson of Jamestown in Falconer and ending at the Forestville American Legion.
Thomas Joseph "TJ" Joy, the only child born to Joseph and Angela Joy, was born with a rare brain malformation called PolyMicroGyria, which causes feeding problems, developmental delays, mental retardation, and epilepsy. One week shy of TJ's birthday, he suffered a seizure in his sleep and was declared dead a short time later. Doctors ruled it SUDEP, or sudden unexplained death of an epileptic person.
The Joys were later told a seizure mattress alarm could have been purchased, preventing their son's death. The TJ Joy Fund was established in TJ's memory to raise money to purchase the seizure mats to prevent future death of seizures and other financial needs incurred by PMG and epilepsy patients. The mats are not covered by insurance.
Joy Ride organizers have set a goal of 150 motorcycles for the event. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. on Aug. 24 with the ride starting at noon. Once riders arrive in Forestville, there will be live music by the Rustic Ramblers and Sean Patrick McGraw, an appearance by Maximum Force wrestlers, food, a Chinese auction and several giveaways that include a BlackBerry Playbook tablet computer, children's bench rocker handmade and donated by Papa's Shop in Forestville, a Keurig Elite coffee and iced tea machine and a Harley Davidson model train set. Doors open at 2 p.m.
Registration is $20 per motorcycle and $10 per buddy. Admission to the benefit only is $10 a person, with children ages 12 and under admitted free. Meals are free with paid registrations or admissions.
