Cummins, Inc. Jamestown Engine Plant officials recently announced a three-year plan to help pay for Dream It Do It of Western New York.
Money will be used to form a community education coalition in Chautauqua County and provide a director. The coalition will develop a strategy and pursue opportunities to increase awareness of science, technology, engineering and manufacturing careers in the region.
A total of $232,500 from two Cummins sources will be distributed over three years.
One source is a corporate grant from the Cummins Foundation for $157,500. In the first year, $90,000 will be available with $45,000 available the second year and $22,500 available the third year.
The second source is from the Cummins Engine Business Unit for $75,000. It will be distributed in three equal amounts of $25,000 a year.
"Cummins has been instrumental to the startup and success of the Dream It Do It which is an initiative to promote careers in manufacturing," said Todd Tranum, Dream It Do It Western New York president and chief executive officer, Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce president and chief executive officer and Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier executive director. "With the support of Cummins we were able to launch DIDI in Chautauqua County and expand the program regionally. This funding empowers us to take our efforts to another level. The formation of the Education Coalition focused on the enhancement of STEM opportunities in Chautauqua County will enrich educational opportunities throughout the County and connect our future workforce to careers in our community."
The mission of the Chautauqua County Education Coalition is to develop and implement solutions to meet the evolving workforce requirements of the community with a focus on enhancing STEM educational opportunities.
"We are greatly appreciative of the support of Cummins for our collective efforts to enhance STEM education in Chautauqua County," said Dr. Peter Beeson, executive director of the STEM Education Coalition. "There are significant opportunities to link the learning that is occurring in primary and secondary education to careers right here in our back yard. This is a County with significant assets to showcase and the STEM Education Coalition, working with the schools and a variety of community partners will help open the eyes of the young minds in our school systems to those assets."
