EAST RANDOLPH - William L. "Grandpa Bill" Stankey, 85, of Williams Street, East Randolph, passed away Friday (June 28, 2013), at home, with his wife, Eleanore by his side.
Bill was born July 9, 1927, in Conewango Valley, N.Y., the son of the late Fred F. and Etta P. Covedill Stankey.
He attended the Axeville Corners School in Conewango Valley, and was a retired heavy-equipment operator for Honke-Tonk Construction, and was actively involved in the building of the Southern Tier Expressway. In earlier years, he had worked for his father as a milk hauler for many area dairy farmers.

He was a member of the Randolph American Legion Post 181 in Randolph and was a former member of the Randolph Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 2273.
He loved his grandchildren dearly, as they were the apple of his eye. He was a fan of racing and NASCAR, in his younger days, he had raced cars in Leon. He was always known for his immaculate lawn that he took such pride in.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eleanore Thalheimer Stankey, whom he married on June 6, 1958, in Cheektowaga, N.Y.; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Rhinehart and husband, Casey, of Ellington; two grandchildren: Lance Corporal Wesley William Rhinehart, USMC of Morrisville, N.Y., and Elise Annette Rhinehart of Madison, N.Y. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and special family friends.
A celebration of life service will be held next Tuesday July 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Kennedy United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jennifer Delahoy, pastor of the church, will officiate. Inurnment will be In the East Randolph Cemetery. At Bill's request, visitation will not be observed.
