BUSTI - Three people were sent to WCA Hospital with minor injuries Thursday morning following an accident in Busti involving a Chautauqua County CARTS bus.
According to the Lakewood-Busti Police Department, a vehicle towing a boat on a trailer failed to stop at a stop sign while traveling northbound on Wellman Road at 7:12 a.m. The vehicle was operated by Edward L. Fike, 56, of Tidioute, Pa.
The boat and trailer were struck by the CARTS bus, operated by Robert V. Greene, 65, of Bemus Point. The bus was traveling eastbound on Kortwright Road, police said.
Three people were sent to the hospital after an accident that involved a Chautauqua County CARTS bus. Only minor injuries were reported.
After the crash, the trailer broke off the vehicle and struck a utility pole. The bus ended up in the ditch.
"The occupants involved in this accident were very fortunate to walk away with relatively minor injuries," said Sgt. Paul Gustafson, investigator with the Lakewood-Busti Police Department. "This was a situation where a second or two difference could have made for a very different outcome."
Greene and two passengers on the bus were transported to the hospital by Busti and Lakewood firefighters. Fike was not injured, but was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign, police said.
Gustafson said the intersection has proven problematic in the past, with many motorists disregarding the stop sign.
"The fact that a bus was involved in this accident made for the potential for mass injuries," he said. "Again, we are thankful for those involved that the injuries were deemed relatively minor."
