The May meeting of the Bemus Point Historical Society featured a program on antique bottle collecting by Vince Martonis, Hanover historian. Martonis included an explanation of types of collectible bottles, how they were manufactured, how to date old bottles and how to gauge value. Among the 50-plus bottles on display were many from Chautauqua County: Fenner's Capitol Bitters (Fredonia), Pettit's Canker Balsam (Fredonia), Lyon's Celery Tonic (Dunkirk), Emry Davis inks (Jamestown), Gilberds fruit jars (Jamestown), Mayville Bottling Works (beer), Seivert's Sarsaparilla (Fredonia), Cassadaga Spring Water, and others. Also displayed and discussed were rare historical flasks, mineral waters, milks, wines, poisons, and more. Attendees had chances to win four old bottles donated by Martonis. Old bottle magazines and other handouts were also given out.
