SYRACUSE - The Fredonia Hillbillies kept their unblemished record intact this week and were rewarded in the most recent New York State Sportswriters Association baseball poll with a No. 2 ranking in Class B.
Fredonia, led by head coach Vince Gullo and right-handed ace Trent Thompson, currently boast a perfect 17-0 record overall, including a spotless 10-0 mark in Division 1 play, and are looking to clinch a second straight sectional title.
Pine Valley, at 7-4, leads the local teams in the Class D rankings at No. 15, while North Collins (7-5) and Brocton (6-4) are close behind at Nos. 18 and 20, respectively.
Clarence is Section 6's top-ranked Class AA squad at No. 3. The Red Devils are 12-0 overall.
Also making the grade in the latest poll from the section was No. 12 Lancaster (9-2) in Class AA, and No. 5 Lake Shore (10-1) and No. 10 Grand Island (8-3) in Class A.
In softball, Forestville, which sports a 7-1 overall mark and has captured Section 6 Class D titles in back-to-back seasons, leads area squads at No. 5 in Class D. Close behind is No. 7 Ripley, at 7-1, and 12th-ranked Brocton, which is 7-3 overall.
Frewsburg is No. 19 in Class C. The Bears recently improved their record to 12-3 overall and are 10-0 in league on their way to being crowned Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 champions.
Rounding out area teams are No. 21 Olean (9-3), which last week no-hit league-rival Southwestern, and No. 25 Fredonia (11-3).
Other softball squads from the section that find themselves in the polls are, from Class AA, Clarence (No. 4 at 14-1), Niagara Falls (No. 19 at 9-1), Lancaster (No. 1 at 9-4) and Niagara Wheatfield (No. 25 at 8-3).
In Class A Hamburg is No. 7 thanks to its 7-3 mark, Iroquois is No. 8 at 8-1 overall and Grand Island is No. 3 after capturing seven wins in 10 games this season.
Depew is the ninth-ranked team in Class B at 13-2.
