After a tough road trip to Myrtle Beach, Maple Grove broke through for its first win of the season and did it in style with a 7-0 shutout over Panama (0-1, 1-2) in Division 3 baseball on Monday.
Jake Swan was brilliant on the mound for the Red Dragons (1-0, 1-5), throwing a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts while giving up four walks. He had plenty of offensive support beginning in the first inning as Jonah Tanner walked and Will Lucas tripled him home, Collin Stack also had an RBI double and Josh Ahlstrom laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Stack for a 3-0 lead.
Maple Grove added three more in third when Tanner led off with a hit and stole second, Stack then walked and Swan delivered an RBI single to score Tanner. A pair of wild pitches brought in two more runs and it was 6-0 at that point.
Tanner ended the day with two hits as did Swan and Gram Nelson added two hits with a double.
Alec Blose had Panama's lone hit while Kyle McIntyre gave up nine hits and struck out six with two walks in the losing effort.
