The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office will host four boating safety classes in the spring.
Courses will be held at the following times and locations:
May 4, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Cassadaga American Legion, 228 Maple Ave., Cassadaga, with students asked to bring a bag lunch;
May 11, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lawson Boating Heritage Center, 73 Lakeside Drive, Bemus Point, with lunch provided;
May 18, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Southwestern Middle School, 600 Hunt Road, West Ellicott, with students asked to bring a bag lunch;
June 15, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Northern Chautauqua Conservation Club, 1 N. Mullet St., Dunkirk, with lunch provided.
There is no pre-registration required for any of the courses and the courses are free for those between the ages of 10 and 17 years of age. Registration will take place at the site of the class. Parents of those under the age of 18 have to sign a release form. Those ages 18 and over must pay a $10 fee to New York state before receiving the certification card.
Classes are required for anyone between the ages of 10 and 18 to operate a boat and for everyone ages 14 and above to operate a personal watercraft.
