Betty J. Mead, 84, of Harris Hill Road, Falconer, passed away unexpectedly Monday (March 25, 2013), in Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa.
She was born Nov. 3, 1928, in the town of Ellicott, the daughter of the late Charles B. and Laura Moody Swanson.
Betty was a 1946 graduate of Falconer High School, and along with her late husband, Virland Mead had owned and operated the Mead Farm on Harris Hill since 1950, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Fargo Schools Mothers Club, Muffin Ladies, town of Poland Senior Citizens and Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and will be deeply missed. She enjoyed spending time with her family, working on the family farm, cooking and baking, and dancing.
Surviving are five daughters: Beverly Brue of Summerville, S.C., Patricia (Ory) Mee of Hilton, N.Y., Diane (Robert) Gatto of Falconer, Susan (Michael) Laska and Beth Woodward (Robert Pollock), all of Jamestown; a son, Brian (Rebecca) Mead of Falconer; 13 grandchildren: James (Bethany) Dahlberg of Bemus Point, David Dahlberg of Goose Creek, S.C., Cory (Susan) Mee of Toledo, Ohio, Eileen (Vic-tor) Avram of Canton, Mich., Ryan (Haniya) Mee of Davidson, N.C., Robert (Alicia) Gatto of Warren, Pa., Alyssa Gatto of Hoboken, N.J., Shaun (Alicia) Laska of Jamestown, Jeffrey (Alivia) Laska of Frewsburg, Adam Mead of Fay-etteville, Ark., Amanda Mead of Falconer, Jamie (Timothy) Juul of Roches-ter, N.Y., and Katie Rahr (Dan Nagel) of Webster, N.Y; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; and a sister Donna Phelka (Leo Jenkins) of Lake Alfred, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virland F. Mead, whom she married Nov. 9, 1946, in Falconer, and who died April 24, 2009; two great-grandchildren: Adalyn Kathryn Gatto and Gabriel Phoenix Laska; four brothers; and three sisters.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. David McCarthy of Gerry Free Methodist Church will officiate. Buri-al will be in Gerry Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received by the family from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
