Ronald G. Thompson, 78, of Levant, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013. He was born Nov. 13, 1934, in Falconer, N.Y., the son of the late Gilbert and Marguerite (Lawson) Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his lifelong friend, Richard Sweet.
Ron attended Falconer Central School. Prior to his military service, he was employed at Dahlstrom's Manufacturing Company. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After several weeks of being drafted, he was sent to active duty in Germany from Oct. 18, 1957, to Oct. 8, 1959, and was in the United States Army Reserves until Oct. 17, 1963. He was a SP4 E4 AUS with the 287th ORD CO USAR.
Ron was an avid marks-man and sharpshooter, receiving many various medals for his expertise. He worked at Valeo Manufacturing Company, previously known as Blackstone, for 38 years soldering hundreds of radiators, before his retirement in 1999. Ron was a homebody and avid hunter and outdoorsman. He looked forward to hunting deer and turkey every year with his son, Daniel. He enjoyed working in his garden and planting hundreds of evergreen trees on his property for years. He loved his dogs and cats and took much interest in feeding the birds, mowing the lawn and just about anything that could keep him outside. He loved the outdoors profusely.

He was faithful watching NASCAR races on television with his son, Daniel. He also loved to read. He always said "knowledge never gets old." He loved country music and was a big fan of Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen. Friends will remember Ron enjoyed life to the fullest. He was cheerful, gracious and compassionate. Ron will be sadly missed by anyone who knew him.
He is survived by his companion, Shirley Haynes of Conewango Valley, N.Y.; two sons, Daniel (Sue) Thompson of Levant, N.Y., Curtis Thompson of Conwango Valley, N.Y.; like daughters, Debra (David) Oakes of Cherry Creek, N.Y. and Shila (Seneca) Ray of Conewango Valley, N.Y.; a brother, Kenneth (Arlene) Thompson of Falconer, N.Y.; a grandson, Scott Thompson of Falconer, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Amanda (Jim) Tanner of Falconer, N.Y.; and also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in the Falconer Funeral Home. Rev. Kenneth Pratt of Cherry Creek Assembly of God will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer.
Friends will be received by the family from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
