"America's Past Munitions Development and Local Production" will be explored as part of the Teaching With Primary Sources workshop series for area school educators and librarians on March 7 at Jamestown Community College.
The session, featuring Chautauqua County historian Michelle Henry, will be held in Room 123 of JCC's Carnahan Center.
Mike Jabot, a professor in the State University of New York at Fredonia's College of Education, will present "Power Production: Niagara Falls and Power Production in the Future" on March 21 at the Robert H. Jackson Center.
The workshops, which are conducted from 4:30-7 p.m., are designed to assist library media specialists, pre-service, science, English language arts and social studies teachers address common core learning standards. The sessions include dinner and three contact hours that can be applied toward teachers' Annual Professional Performance Review. Registration is required and space is limited.

The Teaching with Primary Sources project brings together key educators in science and social studies for professional development sessions based on primary sources and educational resources at the Library of Congress and provides pragmatic solutions in applying them to standards within the classroom.
The sessions address general misconceptions in the sciences and encourage and develop cooperation and discussion among social studies, ELA, and math/science educators. Each session begins with an introduction to the Library of Congress' digital primary sources and professional development resources such as TPS Direct. A topic-specific presentation on a science subject by an expert in the field is also included.
Each session concludes with a presentation linking the specific subject matter to Library of Congress online resources and ways to integrate it into the curriculum. Participants will learn how to navigate the online library, explore primary sources, analyze primary and secondary sources, and determine how to legally and ethically use digital resources and teach inquiry-based activities with primary sources.
Library of Congress materials will be disseminated in conjunction with local and natural topics in the sciences on a monthly basis either at JCC or the Robert H. Jackson Center. Pam Brown and Julie Livengood, co-directors of the TPS project, provide instruction on accessing the library's primary sources and provide an easily applied lesson aligning reading, writing, and the workshop topic in the CCLS model.
