ALFRED - Although involved in a low-scoring NJCAA Region 3, Division II game Saturday afternoon, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team looks forward to the playoffs this week.

The Jayhawks absorbed a 44-34 loss to Alfred State to fall to 3-7 in Region 3 and 15-13 overall.

The setback means the Jayhawks are the No. 4 seed and will entertain No. 5 Genesee CC Wednesday at 2 or 2:30 p.m.

A win at home by the Jayhawks puts them against No. 1 and host Erie CC next Saturday afternoon.

The Jayhawks had a tough start against Alfred (8-2, 18-7) as they could only manage two points in the first nine minutes.

Carley Fanning came off the Alfred bench and sparked the Lady Pioneers to a 25-13 halftime lead with 10 of her 13 points. She hit three 3-pointers during the first half.

The second half saw the Jayhawks fall behind by 18, but then cut the deficit to six points at 40-34. They had a chance to reduce the deficit further, but missed a jumper and grabbed the rebound only to be out of bounds with it.

Destiny Brito canned 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch for Alfred State, which was held to only 19 points after intermission while JCC had 21 points.

JCC really struggled offensively as it made only 11-of-57 from the field and 12-of-22 from the foul line. The Jayhawks missed all nine 3-pointers and the front ends of three one-and-ones.

Kelsie Beaver had nine rebounds and nine points and Ashley DePane eight points and eight rebounds for JCC. Taylor Storer recorded eight steals.
